AI agent audit trails

An AI agent audit trail is a complete, time-ordered record of every action an agent took, who it acted for and who approved what, kept so that someone outside the team can rely on it.

What to record

What should an AI agent audit trail record?

For every action, the time, the agent and its version, the model and prompt version it ran, the tool it called, the input it received and the output it produced, the user or system it acted for, and any person who approved the step. Store the full data where your policies allow, and keep at least a fingerprint of it everywhere.

How is an audit trail different from debugging traces?

Traces help engineers find bugs, so they are sampled, trimmed and rotated. An audit trail has to be complete and kept for a set period, because its job is to answer questions from people outside the team, such as auditors, regulators, customers and courts.

Making it trustworthy

What makes an audit trail trustworthy?

Four things. It is complete, with no missing steps. It is unchanged since it was written. Each entry is tied to a specific agent and person. And someone outside your organization can check the first three without taking your word for them.

How do I make AI agent logs tamper-evident?

There are a few ways, and they combine well. Write-once storage, such as Amazon S3 Object Lock, stops edits inside one provider. Chaining each entry to a hash of the one before shows when a step is removed. Trusted timestamps under RFC 3161 prove when an entry existed. A signed shared ledger such as TIP combines signatures, links and independent copies, so checking does not depend on any one company.

Is write-once storage enough?

It helps, but the operator still controls the account, the retention settings and what gets written in the first place, so auditors have to trust that operator. Signatures made when the action happens, kept somewhere the operator does not control alone, close that gap.

Keeping and sharing it

How long should I keep an AI agent audit trail?

As long as the law and your contracts require. For high-risk systems under the EU AI Act, providers and deployers must keep automatically generated logs for at least six months, and sector rules in finance and healthcare often require years.

Agent observability on TIP records each agent action as a signed, tamper-evident entry that anyone you choose can check, while your data stays on your systems. It is a commercial service from The AI Lab.
